Example: TOMCAT
Cranfield’s Total Obsolescence Management Capability Assessment Tool (TOMCAT) has been developed and validated with data from a number of major, complex, longlife equipment projects such as Eurofighter Typhoon. TOMCAT assesses the capability of the programme management team, and their supply chain, in the effective management of component obsolescence throughout an asset’s life.

Example: Evidence-based reduction of No Fault Found at BAE Systems
A consultant-led approach backed with innovative research helped BAe Systems to reduce a high component rejection rate in operational aircraft. Over forty percent of components rejected were later classified as No Fault Found, a substantial cost in time and money. A “tiger team” of Cranfield TES and BAE personnel analysed NVM data from over 800 equipment failures and identified common modes. A range of key improvements was specified and implemented including greater liaison between the design authority and the manufacturer, software and hardware changes, on-aircraft diagnosis and corrective action aligned to the original fault. The failure rate halved and the No Fault Found rate fell by eighty percent, saving many millions over the fleet life.
